How come shops can knock 40% off the price of things on Boxing Day? Doesn’t this just mean they’re purposefully ripping us off for the rest of the year. Particularly in the lead up to the Christmas cash cow.

My father-in-law and I have been discussing this issue at length all week.
A lot of companies factor in sales into their budgets, and do actually over price things then have sales to bring them to just below the price they actually want to get, so it works out at their target profit over the course of the year. So, I never ever buy anything from Target if it isn’t 20%, because I know I’m paying above full price.
Apparently that’s the way Coca-Cola work.
The other thing that they factor in is that they probably aren’t going to shift all of the stock that they have bought and will mark it down once it’s been in the store too long.
The other thing is that they advertise things as big sales when, if you wait another month or two, you will get the same item for the same special anyway.
As far as I am concerned, the Boxing Day sales are a farce. There are some genuine sales, such as David Jones half-yearly clearance, but most stores just schedule a big-looking sale to fall on that week because they know they will get the customers.
