Feeding on ourselves

I’ve been playing around with my RSS settings. I broke a couple of things. But now they’re fixed. I think.

If you’d like to subscribe and you’ve been having issues recently with the “RSS” link on the site – now’s the time. It works. Hooray. Click here to update your feed.

Also, if you subscribe to any old versions of the feed you should probably change – the nathanintownsville domain expires in a month.

Blogged to the nines

It’s the 9th of the 9th 2009 today. 09/09/09. Wonderful. To make the most of it I’m going to post nine lists of nine things. Exciting stuff. Stay tuned.

St. Eutychus around the web

Turns out the Catholics already have a saint named Eutychus. I’m not sure it’s the same guy.

But there is a great little song about Eutychus on YouTube – skip to about a minute forty five in for the good bit.

Alternatively, watch it in lego…

The perils of popularity

You may have noticed that my blog goes down occasionally. Hightek Hosting, my shared webhost, is a pretty awesome hosting company – and it turns out I’ve been causing headaches for all the other people on my server.

Here’s an email I received from the host today – my server’s name is Zeus.

Thanks to some smart and watchful technicians overnight, it appears that we’ve finally tracked down the cause of the constant Zeus Up/Down issues…and unfortunately, yes, it is your site causing them.

Basically, in short, your site fired up a bucketload of apache services and obviously fired them all at MySQL, causing an astronomincal load increase to the point of which we basically have to reboot the server to get it back online.

Now, I don’t know what a lot of that jargon means – but in short, I’m too popular for my own good.

2,000

This is the 2000th post on this blog. That’s impressive by any measure.

217 of these have been about Christianity.
98 have been about coffee.
291 have been about communication.
337 have been about culture.
90 have been about sport.
619 have been curious things from around the internet.
648 have been about life in the Campbell household.
35 have been links from my Google Reader (since I changed the category they went in to)
And 30 have been me trying to get a photo out of Nigerian scammers.

You might notice that doesn’t add up to 2,000. That’s because some categories overlap.

118 of these posts were made in 2006
90 were made in 2007
258 were made in 2008
1534 were made this year.

So humble reader – have you got a favourite? Have you never commented before? Use this as an opportunity to tell me what it is you’d like to see more of around these parts.

Oh, and check out my very first ever post in its original context

Oh yeah, and I’ve used 4,010 tags and received 3,879 comments.

57 comments came from Simone.
252 from Stuss.
359 from Leah.
310 from Amy.
61 from Ben.
39 from Mark.

I’ve made 512.

If you want to know how many you’ve made – let me know.

Spring cleaning

Spring has sprung – well, it feels like it has for those of us living in the tropics and enjoying 27 degree days.

I’ve done some further rethinking about how I structure this here page – and I’ve moved the daily posts of links out of the “Curiosities” column and into the far right.

You’ll also notice some new little images in the footer which were fun to put together. I may move to styling all my images like little polaroids, but we’ll see.

If you’ve got more suggestions for tweaks I should make – hit me up in the comments. I’ve got a fair bit of time on my hands this week.

Scamorama

I mentioned the other day that I was going to pull the scambaiting posts off my main page. They were too long for anybody not interested in reading through pages and pages of my interactions with random Africans.

Well, today I did it – so from now on you can get your scam fix here – or subscribe to my scam posts here – for the time being these posts will still appear in my full RSS feed

You’ll see a link to the Scambaiting category in the far right column, and the headings of the last five posts to appear there.

To whet your appetite – here’s a wordle of all of Dr Paul’s correspondence to me…

Trying new things

I’ve been tweaking my design a bit in my allocated blog time today – rather than posting. Check out the funky new drop down menu in the top right of the design, and first time (and regulars coming back for the first time) visitors will get a nice little welcome message from now on.

Try it and tell me what you think.

Off to opening night of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music now. I’ll come back more cultured, but don’t worry, I’ve got a heap of trivial things to post tomorrow to get you through your weekend.

Change in the air

I’m gradually making the switch between this geographically and personally specific domain name – and my new, as voted by you, domain – st-eutychus.

All the links and stuff on the page will now direct to “st-eutychus” links.

Eutychus was the young man who fell asleep, and out a window to his death, during a sermon by Paul. Paul felt so guilty that he resurrected him.

The current domain expires in December, and will work up until then. I’ll change the name of the blog when I have a new design ready to go.

Exciting times.

Catharsis

There is something cathartic about unsubscribing from an annoying blog you subscribed to on a whim. I can now appreciate the joy with which Strongbad yells “DELETED”. Though it’s a double edged sword because it hurts when the number of people subscribing to your own annoying blog drops…

Page turner

Woohoo. After a fair bit of frustrating experimenting with php I’ve got the “older posts” link to actually display older posts, rather than just the same 20 posts that appear on the front page. Now I just have to get the sidebar behaving correctly… But now I have a headache.

Something’s afoot(er)

You may have noticed a lack of posts today. I have an excuse – scroll to the bottom of the page and check out the new, improved, footer.

I’ll be playing with it a little more as time allows (and I’m still trying to get archived pages to actually work).

I’m watching the cricket tonight. It’s the first night of cricket that I haven’t had something on the next day. It’s nice. Robyn’s asleep on the couch, the fish tank is bubbling away… so much serenity.

Time Machine

Windows Live Writer apparently thinks we’re in the future. Some posts have now reappeared in their natural chronological order.

Windows Live Writer is really handy. You should check it out (if you haven’t already started using it).

Raising the bar

Visitors to this blog (rather than my band of merry subscribers) may have noticed the nifty little toolbar that now floats on the bottom of the page – what do you reckon? Like it? Loathe it? Let me know in the comments.

If you haven’t dropped by to see what I’m talking about – check it out here…

Gravatar gravitas

Have you ever noticed that when I comment here (and elsewhere) my little avatar thing is an awesome little picture?

Like so…

Well, you can get one too – my site, like many others around the interwebs, uses Gravatar – and setting one up is free and easy.

All you need to do is go to that site and upload an image that will be associated with your email address.
