That’s a graphical illustration of the typical path of the home consumption of a coffee snob. If you’ve skipped any of those stages good on you. The path from International Roast to roasting international beans at home is one filled with pitfalls and dangers.

The best way to traverse this is with the help of others. I’ve found the forum at coffeesnobs.com.au to be particularly helpful in my own personal coffee (r)evolution.

The forum was most helpful during the rebuild of Sheila, my Rancilio beastie.

I’ve collected a bunch of links to particular discussions that I think are vital to such a process.

This is something I would like to do when I have some spare time – but I also don’t want to electrocute myself. The Panasonic SD-200 breadmaker I use for roasting is annoying because you can’t just switch it on and make it spin. This modification adds a switch that just turns the motor on and off.

  1. Does that mean that because I don’t roast my own beans that I’m technically not a coffee snob? (Though, probably the only reason I don’t is that there I some things you just don’t bother with once you spend all day with a toddler.)

    1. I would say once you start buying beans that don’t come from the supermarket you’re a coffee snob. Buying fresh roasted beans and grinding them on demand is where I’d draw the line.

So, if I get mad at myself every time I by a bag of gloria jeans coffee because I’m not going anywhere near anywhere that sells decent coffee anytime soon enough, and that I should go back to buying mail-order from that shop in Mareeba that I used to buy from when I couldn’t buy decent coffee anywhere in Gympie, that’s probably not a real good defense against being a coffee snob, is it?
    Do you know anything much about the Coffee Merchants in Kirwan? I bought my grinder from them years ago, but don’t know what they have by way of decent coffee.
    I miss really good coffee. I need to stop buying Gloria Jeans rubbish. It’s not very nice.
