Coffee by the Numbers

One of the perks of my job is the quantity of industry publications that land on my desk for me to read. This month’s FoodService – a journal for hospitality businesses – includes some facts and figures about coffee. I thought I’d share them with you… they’re from BIS Shrapnel’s Coffee in Australia 2009 – whatever that is…

  • 64% of Australians aged 11 and above drink coffee.
  • 65% of coffee drinkers drink instant.
  • 31% drink a cappuccino
  • 21% drink a flat white
  • 20% drink a latte
  • 10% drink a short black
  • The “food service” coffee market in Australia is worth $435 million – this is the value of the market that the food service market buys it for – I assume that’s not including dedicated coffee houses.
  • The “fully automatic” coffee machine market is worth $270 million a year – which seems odd given the market itself is only worth $435 million.

  • 52% of consumers drink full cream
  • 19% drink semi skim
  • 22% drink skim
  • 3% drink soy
  • 14% are hardcore and don’t have milk

Coffee: Ad value

Old coffee ads are awesome. Especially when they are so riddled with violent chauvinism disguised as humour. Yes. That’s right. Buy me good coffee or get spanked. That’s the ticket. I found this floating around the interwebs – and tracked it down to this collection of ads featuring spankings – there’s a bigger copy of the image here.

Robyn bought me a present yesterday. Bodum coffee cups. They’re awesome because they’ve got a little cup within a cup – they’re double walled. They’re not cheap. But I really like them…

Coffee makes the world go round. And if there’s been one gap in the coffee spectrum it’s in the field of wearable coffee. Harnessing the awesome and incredible powers of coffee waste – not even the good bits – this company is able to make fabric – and then shirts.

YouTube Twosday: Crema of the crop

A while back I speculated that crema wasn’t the most exciting part of a coffee – nor is it necessarily a sign of good coffee. Today the coffee blogosphere is going nuts after former World Barista Champion James Hoffman spilled the beans on a video blog… he agrees.

I know it’s not from YouTube – but it fits with my Tuesday video features.

Coffee on the cheap

It’s possible to make pretty decent coffee for a surprisingly low price. Some people swear by plunger coffee – which is an acquired taste (I think) – but finding a cheap grinder is perilous. Grinders are important. Hand grinders are great – but they’re labour intensive – I’ve often thought about attaching a drill to mine as an experiment – and Make Magazine has beaten me to it… but they used a pepper mill – which I think is probably not as effective as a hand grinder.

Mum’s the word

I found out yesterday that my mum has a blog. My wife told me. Why had I not been informed?

The icecream was delicious…

“Ingredients:
4 eggs
3/4 cup icing sugar – sifted
300mls cream

Method:
Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl until well blended.
In another larger bowl whisk the egg whites until stiff then whisk in the icing sugar a spoon at a time.
In a third bowl whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks, then fold into meringue mixture with egg yolks.
Turn into a 1500ml container, cover and freeze.

Flavours:
Vanilla – add 1 tsp vanilla essence to cream
Coffee – add 2 Tsp strong coffee and 1 Tsp rum or brandy to mixture before freezing
Chocolate – mix 2 Tsp cocoa with 4 Tsp cold milk, warm until blended then combine with 60gm melted chocolate and fold into mix before freezing
Dried Fig and Ginger – Chop one cup of dried figs – cover with strong black chai tea til soft combine with 1/2 cup diced ginger and 1/2 tsp cardammon then blend into ice cream mix and freeze”

This is a series of actual ads from the 1950s. It is awesome. Here’s why they’re like they are

The local stations only had ten seconds for station identification, so the commercials had to be lightning-fast — essentially, eight seconds for the commercial pitch and a two-second shot of the product.”

I suspect I’m starting to understand the utility value of Twitter. Here’s an update on the Slayer Espresso Machine that I’m so excited about – straight from the designer’s mouth…
